Owner and Chef, Derek Perry, along with wife, Natasha, and daughter Madelyn are thrilled to be opening Dreadnaught Eatery in the Spring of 2024.
The food trailer will be located on the community limits of Morell at 14 Coffin Road. Our menu will feature seasonal, locally sourced ingredients with a focus on simple and relatable dishes. Enjoy your meal to go or take advantage of the outdoor seating area.
Like most chefs, Derek began his kitchen career in his teenage years working as a dishwasher. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of Canada in 2004, he worked through the kitchen ranks to become an Executive Chef. During his development in the culinary world he had the opportunity to work all over Canada, learning from many well-known Canadian Chefs such as; Takashi Murakami, Gordon Baily, and Stephen Treadwell. In 2013 Derek took a break from professional kitchens to explore other opportunities in life and support his family. During that time Derek continued to showcase his passion of cooking at large family events and encouraging their daughter's interest and creativity in cooking through family competitions with Natasha and Madelyn. He is now very excited to be returning to his roots and opening his own kitchen.
"Dreadnaught" comes from two origins for us; community connection and culinary inspiration. Primarily, we wanted a name significant to the community of Morell. After considering a variety of options and nothing feeling just right, our research of Morell lead us to 'it' — the perfect name and community link. The first hockey rink in Morell was built in 1914 and the original community team was known as "The Dreadnoughts". More information can be found on the Morell Community website.
Secondly, one of our favorite chefs, Anthony Bourdain used the name in his New York Times best-selling book Kitchen Confidential. Not wanting to name his former employer, Bourdain used the name "Dreadnaught" as his fictitious restaurant. It had been a few years since either of us had read the book but once the association was made we knew that we had finally found our name.
As we embraced the name and continued our research, we discovered that "Dreadnaught" is the name of a British battle ship that launched in 1906; which likely played a part in the original hockey team getting its name. The nautical connection is why we have incorporated an anchor in our logo.
We look forward to being an addition to the amazing community of Morell and we cannot wait to meet you all!!
We are in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC!!!! Best and most incredible name drop I have ever seen. As a lifelong fan of the magazine, this is truly a pinch-me moment. We’ve been included in a list alongside some absolutely amazing locations, and I honestly don’t know how we made the radar—but I’m forever grateful for this incredible recognition.
Being featured by National Geographic as one of the top places to eat in Prince Edward Island is more than an honor—it’s a dream. We’ve always poured our hearts into crafting a menu that celebrates the best of PEI’s local ingredients, like our “Naughty” Burger and lobster flatbread. To see that passion recognized on a global stage is surreal.
Did NOT see this coming!
Thank you so much to everyone- organizers, burger lovers and more. There were some truly incredible submissions across the island this year. We all raised money to help support Anderson House and that is a win for everyone.
We have also decided as a family that for the remainder of the season to continue the $1/per burger donation to Anderson House for any/ all Leroy's sold.
Yes, will be bringing 'The Leroy' back to the menu!! Date to be determined but there will be plenty of notice.
Thank you again from the Perry family and the whole Dreadnaught team
